More on Izangi and Izanami - Japanese Mythology

Izanami gave birth to Kagutsuchi, the fire god. However, at the birth of this god, Izanami was burned and fell to the ground. When she died, more gods were born such as the earth goddess and the water goddess. Izangi shed tears for the loss of his beloved, which sprang forth more gods. Kagutuchi was so angry with Izangi that he sliced him up with a sword. All of these pieces became gods as well. His blood, which splattered into the sky, created the Milky Way.

Izangi wanted his love back so he followed her to Yomi the name of the underworld by Japanese Mythology. He finally found her hiding away in the darkness. He begged her to return with him. She let him know that she had eaten the dark food of Yomi and could never return to the world of the living. When she lay down to sleep, Izangi lit a torch so he could see. With the light, Izangi could see the decaying body of his wife. The sight was so shocking and frightening that he dropped the torch and ran away.

All the noise awoken Izanami and she tried to stop Izangi from leaving her. He then built a barrier between the world of the dead and the world of living with a very large boulder. He then told everyone that he was going to divorce his wife. Even from the depths of Yomi she protested and that if he divorce her she would take 1000 of the living every day. He told her he would give her 1,500 each day.

This was the beginning of death upon the earth.
