Lilith - Sumerian Myth

Often referred to as the first woman on earth created by God from the same dust he molded Adam. However, Adam wanted a submissive companion to rule over her. Lilith was a woman that today could be compared with a militant feminist, independent, claiming equality, and having their own criteria over things.

Quarrels between Adam and Lilith made her go away looking for independence. God sent three angels to carry her back to Adam, but she refused and convinced the angels to let her go, then God created Eve. Lilith appears in Sumerian, Mesopotamian, Babylonian, and Jewish mythology so it is hard to make clear the reason of her departure.

The common belief is that she was tired of Adam's domination and in revenge, she went away to strangle male newborns, but promising the angels that she would respect the lives of those babies whose mother hung an amulet on them with their names; Sansanvi, Sanvi, and Semangelaf.

The angels overpowered Lilith with wings and since that, she is described as a sort of half-vampire and half-predating animal. In ancient Jewish books, she is referred as to a night-howling demon, but there are many other books that recorded her existence, including the Talmud, the Bible, and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

She continued kidnapping and killing babies until she decided to seduce men to become pregnant giving birth to demon sons. Lilith was a great mother that settled agricultural tribes to fight against Adam's nomadic herdsmen.

Lilith also created the Red Sea, supposed to be filled with the blood of killed newborns and needing periodic replenishment. Now, as the mother of the demons she continued sacrificing children with the aid of her own sons to accomplish the task.

Lilith is associated to Lenith, an Etruscan divinity with no face that shared with the Greek Hecate and Persephone the Gate to the underworld. However, Lenith was the only who received the souls of the dead with the condition of having sex with men to conceive demon children.
