King Arthur - Celtic Mythology
Sometimes simply referred to as Arthur Pendragon, King
Arthur is one of the most important figures in the mythology of Great Britain
and usually confused with a real historic knight immortalized by the chronicles
written by Geoffrey of Monmouth.
King Arthur is considered a classic of the Celtic
Mythology, not a god but the personification of the ideal ruler. The story is
based on a kid who has to learn all the way and take countless challenges to
understand his own nature and that of the people that some day would call him
their sovereign.
This way and according with old Welsh texts, his
title of King is disputed, but literal translation of those ancient papers
describe Arthur as the ameraudur-to-be, a sort of emperor in the period before
the Middle Ages.
The stories of King Arthur are recorded in texts
written prior to the 11th century, but compiled as a collection in the 14th
century. In all sources, Arthur is described as King of the Britons and almost
any other Celtic kingdom known during those early days.
Due to the poetic nature of the stories and the
Dark Age society of that period of the time, researchers believe that Arthur was
a real man. If so, he was chosen not as king but as the main character to
develop this bardic story, in which many other mythical figures, including
Merlin the Magician, are included.
Authorship of those stories did not belong to
Geoffrey of Monmouth, who was the Archdeacon of Monmouth, later named Bishop of
Saint Asaphs. According to his own testimony, Geoffrey introduced King Arthur in
the British popular folklore around 1136, as a part of a work that he was
writing titled "History of the Kings of Britain".
Geoffrey of Monmouth stated that such tales were taken from "a certain, very
ancient book which was written in the British language", but not even today has
anyone proven that King Arthur and all the mythical court around him existed as
a real royal dynasty.
