Hercules - Greek Mythology
Hercules is one of the most popular and well-known
Greek heroes sometimes referred to as Herakles. The legend of Hercules begins
with his birth. Zeus was in love with a Greek woman by the name of Alcmene.
Alcmene became pregnant by Zeus. Hera who was Zeus’s god wife was so angry that
she tried in every way to prevent the birth of this child. She did not succeed
and to cause her even more pain and anger, the child was named Herakles, which
translates to mean “glorious gift of Hera”. Hera sent snakes into the crib with
Hercules in the hopes of killing this child; however, Hercules was so strong
even as an infant that he strangled each snake with his bare hands before even
one could bite.
Because of Hera’s hatred toward him, Hercules had a
very troubled life. She caused him to go mad and kill his wife and children
among many other labors. There are 12 main labors that everyone is accustomed to
hearing about which include The Lion, The Hydra, The Hind, The Boar, The
Stables, The Birds, The Bull, The Horses, The Belt, The Cattle, The Apples, and
the Cerebus.
Along with these labors, Hercules was as well known
for fighting off villains as Superman is today. He rescued several damsels in
distress including Hesione, fought against immortals such as Apollo, and aided
in the battle against the Giants when they tried to take over Mount Olympus.
