The Lost Civilization of Atlantis.
The earliest account of this legendary lost island
popularly said to have existed in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean is
credited to Plato.
He states that Atlantis was bigger than Asia Minor
and Libya combined, that at the time (around 9500 BC) it's naval fleet was
advancing to conquer Western Europe and Asia and that it was rules by a
confederation of great kings who had power over adjacent islands and other
continents too.
It was said to be allotted to Poseidon, God of
earthquakes and the sea, and fittingly sunk under the sea, according to legend,
in a single day and night.
According to mythos, Poseidon took for a wife a
mortal woman Cleito and their offspring went on to rule Atlantis until it's
catastrophic disappearance underwater.
Poseidon made laws for Atlantis and these laws were
put into practice and kept alive by his ten ruling sons. Eventually Poseidon’s
son's sons began ruling Atlantic and traditionally there were always ten kings
of Atlantis, representing Atlas (son of Poseidon and first ruler of Atlantis)
and his nine brothers.
When the descendents of Poseidon began to forget the
old laws and married mortals the perfect harmony of Atlantis began to
disintegrate until Zeus, King of the Gods, could bear it no more and presumably
sent floods and earthquakes to destroy the civilization.
