Medusa - Greek Mythology
In Greek mythology, The Gorgons are described as
incredibly ugly monsters that were to be feared immensely. The Gorgons are three
sisters named Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa, who is the most famous of the three.
The sisters were the daughters of Ceto and Photcys, who were both ancient Sea
Gods. While Stheno and Euryale were immortal, Medusa was not.
Medusa was blessed with beautiful long hair that
was much like silk in texture. Medusa was turned into a Gorgon when she declared
that she was more beautiful than the Goddess Athena. She lay with the Sea God
Neptune one day while she was in Athena’s temple and this outraged Athena.
Athena took Medusa’s beautiful hair that she was so proud of and turned it into
snakes. Athena also made it so that the many men who came to see Medusa would no
longer be able to look at her for they would be turned to stone.
Perseus was ordered to cut off the head of Medusa
when he was trying to rescue his mother Danae from King Polydectes. Athena and
Hermes helped him and he was also given a curved sword as well as a shield of
reflection to help remove her head. Perseus was successful in removing the head
of Medusa and he used it as protection in battle before handing it over to
Athena. After she received the head from Perseua, Athena cast the head into her
shield, and there it would remain forever.
