What are the odds of winning big on the slot?
0.00038%
There are millions of people who love to play on the
slot machines and hope that just one turn of those mystical reels will turn them
into an instant millionaire. But what are the odds of actually winning on those
machines?
Well, it all depends on how the reels are set up.
There are typical setups of these reels but there are some that are slightly
varied. Slot machine reels are set up with two different stops. There is the
virtual stop, which happens inside the machine, and there is the actual stop,
which is the stop that the player will see appear on the reels. Each actual stop
may be equivalent to more than just one actual stop. For example, an empty space
on the actual reel may be equal to three virtual stops.
In a slot machine that has been given a typical
weight, the stop that will pay the highest amount (usually called “the jackpot
stop”,) is equal to only one virtual stop. Because there are sixty-four possible
stops, this makes the chances of one reel stopping on that one spot one in
sixty-four. That will give the player one symbol. To make three of these same
jackpot symbols appear each individual reel will need to stop on that same spot.
This makes the chances decrease even more, as each reel will have to hit these
same odds.
So simply put, each reel has a one in sixty –four
chance of landing on the jackpot spot, making the chances of hitting it big on a
slot machine 1 in 262,144.
To dispel any mistaken theories that casinos can
make slot machines suddenly stop paying out big payouts, it’s important to know
that the odds of any given slot machine are built into that particular computer
chip inside the slot machine. These odds cannot be changed unless the chip is
physically taken out of the slot machine and replaced with another.
