ABRAHAM BLAUVELT
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
Who was Abraham Blauvelt?
Abraham Blauvelt was
an infamous Dutch Pirate that was active during the middle 1600’s.
Prior to New York being known as New
York, it was known as the Dutch New Amsterdam. This is where the
thieving of Abraham Blauvelt is most accented during this time. He
was an explorer at one time along the coasts of Honduras and
Nicaragua, after this period of his life he went to England with his
own proposal to establish a settlement in Nicaragua close by the
town of Bluefields. He was enlisted as a naval officer for the
Swedish East India Company and was in command of his own ship by
1644.
When he became in command, he was known
for thieving upon Spanish ships that traveled from Dutch New
Amsterdam and those that visited a harbor in Jamaica. The harbor
today is named Blewfields Bay. However, his command was not one with
staying power as the Spanish and Dutch gained peace in 1648. From
this point on, Blauvelt was not welcome in New Amsterdam.
In 1649, Blauvelt and his crew went to
Newport, Rhode Island to divide all the loot. Of course,
disagreements were everywhere about how the loot should be divided
even the governor of Rhode Island declared one prize illegal.
Blauvelt was not treated very nice in Newport since his reputation
of a thieving pirate could harm the reputation of their beloved
town. By, 1650, Blauvelt was in command of another ship, the French
ship the La Garse.
Finally, in 1663, Blauvelt joined
Captain Sir Christopher Myngs’ and began participating in raids on
Campeche Bay. No one knows exactly what happened to Blauvelt after
this time.
