Who was Nathaniel Butler?
Nathaniel Butler was born c. 1577 in Bedford, England.
He went to sea while he was young and traveled to North America and Guyana.
Nathaniel became a protégé of Richard Rich who was the earl of Warwick and
Protestant leader. Richard Rich made Nathaniel governor of Bermuda from 1619
During the years between 1625 and 1628, Nathaniel
was in command of several vessels during the naval assaults in Spain and in
northern France. He became captain in the royal navy in 1637.
Nathaniel Butler became governor of Warwick’s
pirate colony, which was located on Providence Island in 1638. Around April of
1639, Nathaniel gathered a fleet of Dutch and English ships. He along with the
crews of the ship looted several small towns. The ships raided Trujillo, which
was the chief port of Honduras. Here they received quite a booty in the amount
of 16,000 pounds. Nathaniel kept over half of this booty for himself and sailed
off for England in September of 1639. In 1634, Nathaniel published the
Dialogicall Discourse Concerninge Marine Affairs.
