THOMAS JONES
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
Who was Thomas Jones?
Major Thomas Jones was not always a pirate as many
pirates of the time. He first joined the Irish and fought for James the 2nd
against the British King William the 3rd during the Battle of Boyne in 1690.
Thomas Jones offered his services to the crown of
King of William and received a Letter of Marques. This gave him the right to
plunder as long as it was done to enemies of England, mainly the French. This
was often the reason that many pirates began. One country would give sailors
permission to attack and plunder other ships that were enemies so to speak.
In 1692, Thomas Jones was in Jamaica. Over the next
four years, nothing much is heard about Thomas Jones, however, in 1696 he is
found in what is known today as Massapequa, on Long Island. Here he purchased a
large estate, which included a long stretch along the coast. Jones inlet and
Jones Beach are both named for him.
There were many rumors all centered on the wealth
that Jones had in his possession, but no one really cared and accepted him as
part of the rich residents. He was in good graces with the crown and one of his
sons was appointed Official Counsel of the Colony of New York. As far as anyone
knew Jones made his fortune in the shipping industry but not too many mentioned
piracy.
