WORLD'S SECOND IMPEACHED
US PRESIDENT
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
Who was the second impeached President in US history?
The world was in an uproar in the
winter of 1998 when the Monica Lewinsky scandal, coupled with the lawsuit filed
by Paula Jones resulted in the impeachment of the President of the United
States, Bill Clinton. The charges in the impeachment were perjury, obstruction
of justice, and abuse of power. It was only the second time a President had been
impeached, after Andrew Johnson made history as the first in 1868, and Bill
Clinton officially became the second United States President to be impeached on
December 19, 1998.
However, in February 1999 Clinton was acquitted by
the Senate. He continued to serve in office until 2001 but this does not mean
that he felt no repercussions from his actions while in office. Upon leaving
office, he was ordered to surrender his right to practice law in the state of
Arkansas for at least five years, which he did. This suspension of his law
license automatically suspended him from serving on the United States Supreme
Court and he decided to resign altogether from that position. He was also caught
up in several lawsuits from Paula Jones that were ongoing for some time. Despite
all of this however, a poll amongst the American public was taken in the winter
of late 1998 and early 1999 and the results from that survey showed that only
one-third of the American people supported the impeachment of the President.
