What was the second World Trade Center attack?
Although the first World Trade
Center attack happened almost a decade before the second attack, it is
definitely the second attack that stands out in the minds of many when they
think about the Twin Towers. These attacks happened on September 11, 2001 and
they were part of a plot to destroy not only these famous structures but attacks
were also made on Pentagon. The White House was also a target of attack however
it was unharmed during the attacks as courageous civilians on the plane that
would act as the bomb took over and ensured the House’s safety.
At 8:46am on the morning of September 11, 2001,
American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North tower of the World Trade
Center and eighteen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 75 crashed into the
South tower of the building. Terrorists who had this as their al-Qaeda mission
were responsible for hijacking the planes and flying them into the two towers.
They did this by bringing fake bombs aboard and telling passengers that they
would bomb the plane in midair and by using small knives and other means of
violence to subdue the passengers and kill whoever they needed to in order to
take control of the planes. Passengers onboard the United Airlines Flight 75
tried to take control of the plane and render the hijackers weaponless however,
their heroic efforts were not enough to save their own lives or the lives of the
others in the towers. It was these attacks that prompted the United States to
begin their official War on Terrorism, which had the mission of going into
Afghanistan and disbanding the al-Qaeda and capturing its leaders.
The planes that crashed into the Twin Towers killed
2,604 people inside the building, the 87 people that were on American Airlines
Flight 11, excluding the hijackers and 59 people on United 175, excluding the
