WORLD'S SECOND HIGHEST MOUNTAIN
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST

What is the world's second highest mountain?

Everyone knows that Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on earth but what mountain stands just under it?

K2 is the second highest mountain on earth and you can tell by its nickname, the Savage Mountain that it may be slightly shorter than Everest but it’s still as death-defying to climb and is still as awesome a sight as the one that stands a few feet higher. In fact, climbing K2 is even more dangerous than climbing Everest, with one out of every four people that try dying on the mountain. In the group of the eight-thousanders (the group of mountains that stand higher than 8,000 feet), K2 has the third highest rate of death for those who try to climb it.

K2 sits in Northern Pakistan in the Karakoram section of the Himalayan Mountains. It derives its name from a listing that European surveyor Thomas Montgomerie gave it, as he referred to the peaks in the order that they appeared in the range. K2 was the second peak within the range and the other peaks were named K1, K3, K4, and K5. However, K2 was the only one to keep this peak designation as its name as the others were eventually renamed Masherbrum, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II.

Only 299 people have successfully climbed K2, compared to 2,600 people who have climbed Everest. The climb is known to be much more dangerous and challenging than Mount Everest due to the greater height that climbers are often at with rougher terrain below them. The weather conditions are also worse here, although they are difficult on Mount Everest as well, but because K2 is much steeper, there’s not much protection from the wind, snow, and ice pelts.
