What is the world's smallest army?
The world’s smallest army is the
Swiss Guard. Recently they celebrated their 500th anniversary as protectors of
Vatican City, which is of course the world’s smallest state.
Today,
there are 110 members of the Swiss Guard. They all are Catholic and have to be 5
foot, 9 inches tall to apply for the job.
The Swiss Guard was started on January 22, 1506
when 150 Swiss mercenaries marched all the way to Rome to serve under Pope
Julius II.
