THE SMALLEST PLANET
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
What is the smallest planet?
You knew the answer: Pluto, so
here are some Pluto facts:
The diameter of Pluto is 2,274 km.
Pluto is named after Hades, the
god of the underworld.
Pluto was discovered in 1930.
Pluto is the only planet that
hasn't been visited by a spacecraft.
Pluto has a moon, Charon, which
was discovered in 1978.
The temperature on Pluto averages
about -220 C.
One day on Pluto is 6.39 Earth
One year on Pluto is 247.7 Earth
***Although the farthest planet
from the sun, it's elliptical orbit sometimes brings it closer than Neptune.
***In 2005 a tenth planet was
found, the elusive Planet X, unofficially named Xena after the warrior princess,
officially called 2003 UB313.
Xena is, however, just slightly larger than Pluto.
****On of August 24 2006 a bunch of astronomers met in
Prague and came up with a new definition of a planet:
A planet is in orbit around the Sun.
A planet is large enough to be round or nearly round.
A planethas cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
As a result Pluto, which crosses the orbit of Neptune,
has been demoted to dwarf planet, leaving only eight planets, the smallest of
which is now Mercury.
The diameter of Mercury is 4,879.4
is named after the messenger god Mercury.
The temperature on Mercury averages
about 354.2 °F.
One day on Mercury is 58.65 Earth
One year on Mercury is 87.97 Earth
