What were the world's smallest Olympics ever held?


The smallest modern Olympics ever held were the first,  the 1896 Summer Olympics (the Games of the I Olympiad) which were held in Athens, Greece from April 06, 1896 to April 15, 1896.

The 1896 Summer Olympics saw only 14 nations and 251 athletes participating.

As records of the these Olympics are sketchy the actual number of nations that participated ranges anywhere from 10 to 15 and the number of athletes from 179 to 246.

We do know that there were 43 events held in 9 sports, the sports were:

  • Athletics

  • Cycling

  • Fencing

  • Gymnastics

  • Shooting

  • Swimming

  • Tennis

  • Weightlifting

  • Wrestling

The 1904 Summer Olympics Games (the Games of the III Olympiad) in St. Louis, Missouri saw only 12 nations compete, but hosted 651 athletes who competed in 91events in 17 sports.
