WORLD'S SMALLEST ATOM
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
What is the world's smallest atom?
We took chemistry and can
confidently say the world's smallest atom is the hydrogen atom with only 1
proton and one electron, but as we soon found out, thanks to one of our
visitors, we were wrong.
The hydrogen atom is 1 Angstrom, or 10-8 centimeters in diameter and has an
atomic weight of 1.00794 and as far as
atomic weight goes is definitely the smallest, but.....
Even though helium is four times heavier than hydrogen
the second electron fills the "1s" shell and results in a slightly more compact
atom. The diameter of the helium atom is 0.98 Angstroms making it the world's smallest
atom.
