the smallest butterfly in the world in the US, not on some tropical island?
The smallest butterfly on record is the Western
Pygmy Blue Butterfly. The scientific name is Brephidium exilis (Lycaenidae).It
has a wingspan of only 5 to 7 mm.
You can find this beautiful butterfly throughout
the southern United States usually close to the coastal areas. It is
unmistakable with brown dorsal wings that become blue closer to their bodies. It
can be seen all year long but is most often seen in early July through September
during the warm weather season.
