One of the wives tales that we all heard growing up is that
if we cross our eyes, they値l stay that way. Of course, most of us crossed our
eyes more than our fair share as we experimented in mirrors and attempted to
make friends laugh and our eyes are not crossed. In fact, only 4% of children
born in the United States have crossed eyes, so it痴 obvious that this old wives
tale is not rooted in fact.
Perhaps this old wives tale was told to children to keep them from making silly
faces in public, embarrassing their parents. Or, maybe there was a child that
had crossed eyes that was being made fun of, and parents warned if the children
crossed their eyes, they too would have to live like that. It痴 not known where
this old wives tale started, but it is known that it is not true!
