Death and sickness seem to attract a lot of old wives tales, and this is certainly the case about bringing cut flowers to the room of someone who is sickly. While flowers are common place in hospital rooms and in rooms of the ill, the old wives tale suggests that if one brings cut flowers into the room of someone who is ill that the flowers will extinguish all of the oxygen from the air and cause the ill person’s demise.

Thankfully, this is a very old and inaccurate old wives tale. This old wives tale was likely started when people would suddenly die after loved ones had come to visit and had brought flowers. As we know now, being at peace with friends and family encourages many people to just let go and stop suffering. It’s a practical thought, but not one that makes any sort of sense. But, if you want to be on the safe side, you can always send a potted plant or some balloons!
