There is a spooky old wives tale that suggests if the eyes of a dead person are left open, he or she will find someone to take with them. The closing of the deceased eyes started with this old wives tale, and so, through the decades we have continued to close the eyes of the deceased. We even go so far as to close the eyes of the bodies that we prepare for viewings or wakes. Of course, this is a peaceful look, and one that is far more attractive than seeing the actual eyes, but it is all rooted in this old wives tale.

Luckily, there is no evidence to suggest that if the eyes of the deceased are not closed that they will actually take someone with them. In fact, it’s not really logical at all since none of us are really in control of when we die or when those around us die. Of course, many consider closing the eyes of the deceased simply something you do out of respect. And, for those that want to be viewed after death, it’s simply a more attractive look!
