Where is the lost gold of Zumbro River?
In southeast Minnesota near Oronoco lies the Zumbro
River where gold was discovered, lost, discovered, and lost again.
The first to happen upon gold in Minnesota was
Holden Whipple in 1856. The legend states that Mr. Whipple was walking along the
bank of the Zumbro River when he say something shiny and when he picked it up
discovered it was gold.
No matter, how he found the gold, everyone rushed
to the area to find his or her fortune. The Oronoco Mining Company was
established in 1858 to mine the gold on the Zumbro River. The founding fathers
of the mining company included Steward B. Clark, John Stevens, Archibold
Ellithorpe, Ebener Collins, William H. Pierce and a few more.
The company created sluices and did discover a
large deposit of clay. Cold winter days began to approach and the operation had
to cease until spring. Spring came and along with it came flooding which swept
away all the appearances of a mining company.
However, the men still had the desire to find gold
and reorganized the company once again. In July 1859, they were ready to search
for the gold once again.
The dream of gold was short lived. On July 3, 1859,
an unpredicted flood occurred and washed the mining company down the Zumbro
River. After this, they gave up and went their separate ways leaving behind the
Others have tried throughout history to find this vein of gold without much
success; only small amounts have been found. One large nugget that was found was
placed in a museum, however, the nugget disappeared as each attempt had in the
Another spot along the Zumbro River held stories of
gold. A small village by the name of Sacramento in Dodge County between
Mantorville and Wasioja in 1855 held rumors of gold. However, the amount of gold
found was never recorded and when this village lost its bid for county seat in
1857, the village soon became abandoned.
If there is gold along the Zumbro River, no one has
had the stamina to withstand all the bad luck that seems to hover around the
river and all that seek his or her fortune.
