In the 50’s  Klondike 5 was encouraged by the phone companies to be used so as to not disturb customers. When real telephone numbers came out 555 was selected as the letters ‘JKL’ never stood for anything. Remember the song ‘Jenny 867 5309’? Well, that was a real number and just imagine how many calls they received asking for ‘Jenny’. The TV show ‘24’ started to exploit this phenomenon by actually airing 555 numbers which when called where answered by various staff of the show. Nowadays 555 phone numbers are being requested by companies just to get the random traffic to promote their company.
