Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe: A Natural Wonder

It’s not surprising that one of the most beautiful sights in the world is considered to be one of the natural Seven Wonders of the World. Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, called “Mosi-oa-Tunya” by the locals, has many different elements, all of which could stand on their own and most likely be considered a natural wonder. As the waterfall plunges down, it send up a beautiful spray created by the falling water and how high the river is will depend on how high the mist will be but it can reach astounding levels. The water also makes the most magnificent roar as it plunges down into the gorge below, which carries the water to the very serene and peaceful lagoons just a bit upstream. It is in these lagoons where one can find many hippo and alligators.

The Victoria Falls is an astounding 1,708 meters wide. It is the largest length of waterfall in the world and 550,000 cubic meters of water plunge over the side every minute. The drop to the valley below is approximately 90 meters to 107 meters, depending on where the water is. The gorge below is named the Zambezi Gorge. This amazing sight is almost too hard to believe, even when you’re standing there looking at it!

And many people do just that. This may be because the Falls has been preserved in its natural state and for that has been marked as National Parks and a World Heritage Site. These designations allow the natural beauty to be preserved without too much interference from the commercialism that comes hand in hand with the tourists. Visitors may come for the sheer beauty or they may choose to take part in the “Flight of the Angels” which provides a stunning view of Victoria Falls. And for those that are a little more daring, there is micro-lighting which will absolutely take your breath away. And for those that really like to walk on the wild side, white water rafting at the base of the falls is also a very popular sport.

Of course any time of year is a great time to come and see the beautiful Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. But because the area has their rain season towards the end of the year, it is February where visitors will see the falls after the heavy rainfall, making it even more magnificent, if that’s possible.
