Urban Legend Surrounding Walt Disney’s Death

When Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, there were a few different theories about his death. He had in fact died from lung cancer because he had spent most of his adolescent and adult years smoking. However, he had stated while he was alive that he did not want a funeral because he wanted people to remember him as he was when he was living. He was 65 at the time of his death and he left much more behind than just Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. He left people wondering where his body was and what had happened to the great artist upon his death. The fact that details surrounding his death were not being released and the family was also not talking about it sparked even more rumors and the most common to come about was that Walt Disney had had his body frozen so that one day, after they had found a cure for the terrible disease that took his life, he could come back to life.

These claims are of course, untrue and Walt Disney was cremated almost immediately following his death. His death wasn’t announced immediately at the time and many believe that this was what sparked the rest of the rumors. However, it wasn’t announced because family members needed to be told before the public. Speculation also arose when the family wasn’t providing any details surrounding the death. This could also be easily enough explained. They were a family in mourning for their loved one and they were also trying to determine what to do with Walt’s body as he had left no specific instructions in his will. He did apparently make his wishes known to someone while he was alive because ‘on his request’ he was cremated the day after he died. The family had a small memorial service in Forest Lawn Cemetery where there is also a grave marker for him. Another interesting piece of trivia related to Walt Disney’s death is that St. Joseph’s, the hospital that he died in, was across the street from a Walt Disney Studios.
