What is Progeria?

Progeria is a medical mystery that accelerates aging. The complete scientific name is Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria syndrome. The disease is known to affect around 1 in 8 million newborns. At the time of this writing, there are around 40 to 45 known cases in the world. At this time there is no known cure.

This medical mystery was discovered in 1886 by Jonathan Hutchinson and Hastings Gilford. From then until the present there have been 100 cases reported.

Most patients with progeria have a very rapid aging process in that they die of old age by the time they are 16 years of age.

The only cause that can be identified is a cell division is created in a newly conceived child or in the gametes of one of the parents. This is caused by mutations in a LMNA gene on chromosome 1.

The disease or condition normally begins to appear at about 18 to 24 months of age. It is seen by limited growth, alopecia and the appearance of a small face, jaw, and pinched nose. As the child grows the skin will become wrinkled, atherosclerosis and they will develop cardiovascular problems. There mental development is in no way affected.

The longest living person with progeria lived to be 29 years of age. The rate that the child will age is around six to eight times faster than a normal child.
