The Legend of the Christmas Tree
Today, most of us put up a Christmas Tree
and decorate it as beautiful as possible; however, many of us do not
know the various legends that brought us to using a Christmas Tree in
our home for the holidays. Here is a run down of the various legends
throughout history.
The
Christmas tree as some believe has its origin in a Pagan Yule
celebration. Families would go out and bring home a live tree for the
wood spirits to have a nice warm place to stay during the cold winter
months. They would hang bells on the branches so they would know when
the wood spirits were there. Other items were hung on the tree such as
food and treats for the wood spirits to eat and a five-pointed
pentagram adorned the top.
Others
believe the Christmas tree originated in northern Europe in the
1300’s where performers would stroll the street carrying pine
boughs with apples. These performers were advertising the miracle plays
that were performed on the steps of the church. The pine boughs
symbolized the Garden of Eden in the play Adam and Eve, which was
performed on December 24th. This tree was known as the paradise tree,
which later was changed to the Christ Child’s Tree.
The
first Christmas tree in America was put up by German immigrants, who
settled in Pennsylvania, on December 20, 1821.
