Kanhoji Angria

Kanhoji Angria captured and held two islands off the coast of Bombay in 1710. He was an active pirate from that time until 1729.

Kanhoji Angria was an African Muslim who was feared throughout the west coast of India for his piracy acts. He captured and held the East India Company’s yacht for ransom in 1712, which brought him quite a bit of fame. He not only was brave and ready to take on any battle but also was known for fighting off the British at Gheriah and Deoghur where his own specially built gun ships were used.

His piracy headquarters was, of course the islands, which he held. From this location, he could and did attack coastal shipping mainly those of the English East India Company. Kanhoji had a very large force, which included his own warships. Men came from all over Europe to join with him and man these unique warships. At one time, he had such a large force that the British believed they were at a stand still with the pirates.

During his reign, he stopped attacking British ships for a time period of four years because of the ransom deal he had made in 1712. By the time Kanhoji Angria passed away in 1729, he was a very wealthy man who left his entire pirate kingdom to Sumbhaji Angria, his son.
