A cluster of bananas
is known as a hand and the 10 or 20 bananas found in the hand are
called fingers.
The starch found in bananas turns to
sugar as the banana ripens, thus as the banana ripens the sweeter it
becomes.
A banana plant is the largest plant
that does not have a wood stem. They are considered a giant herb in
the family along with orchids, palms, and lilies.
Bananas are harvested every day of the
year and are available for consumers year round.
Bananas replenish necessary nutrients
burned during physical exercise such as glycogen, body fluids, and
carbohydrates. They are also a great source for dietary fiber,
Vitamin C, and potassium. Bananas have not cholesterol, fat, or
sodium.
Bananas are grown in Latin and South
America and are not grown commercially in the continental United
States.
Bananas do not ripen on the plant. If left on the plant many times,
they split open and the pulp has a different type of texture and
flavor. Bananas are cut green and left in moist storage area to
ripen slowly.
Bananas were first seen by Americans at
the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. They were wrapped in
foil and the price was 10 cents each.
Friar Tomas is the person accredited to
bringing bananas to the Caribbean in 1516 where he planted the roots
in the rich soil of the tropics.
Banana beer can be found in eastern
Africa.
The banana leaf is used in South East
Asia such as Americans use plastic wrap.
The largest producer of bananas is
India, which grows 16.5 million in 2002, next is Brazil with 6.5
million in 2002.
Over 28 pounds of bananas are eaten by the average American every
year.
